What is an art reproduction?
An art reproduction is a newly painted artwork that recreates an existing, often famous painting. At Fotoalsgemälde.ch, that means a trained artist paints the work from scratch in oil or acrylic on canvas - without the use of prints, computers or clever printing methods. The result is genuine craftsmanship with visible brushstrokes, real layers of colour and the same texture as the original.
In a legal sense, a reproduction is not the same as a copy. Whereas a forgery tries to pass itself off as the original, a reproduction is an independent work made with inspiration from, and respect for, the original. It is the only way to get a genuine oil painting of, for example, Klimt's The Kiss onto your wall - because the original hangs in the Belvedere in Vienna and will never be for sale.
Are reproductions legal in Switzerland?
Yes. It is entirely legal in Switzerland and the EU to produce, buy and resell reproductions of artworks, as long as at least 70 years have passed since the artist's death. That means all the old masters - from the Renaissance to the early modernists - are in the public domain and may be freely reproduced. You can read the Swiss Copyright Act (URG) in full on Fedlex.
At Fotoalsgemälde.ch we stick strictly to works by artists for whom the 70-year term has expired. That means we do not paint reproductions of, for example, Picasso (died 1973) or Salvador Dalí (died 1989), but we are happy to paint works by all of the artists below.

Frequently asked questions about reproductions
How close to the original does the reproduction get?
Our artists are specialised in the different styles, so the likeness is typically close to 100 % - in composition, colours, brushstrokes and texture. We paint in the same medium as the original (oil or acrylic) on canvas. Before we start, we send you a confirmation of the proportions and motif.
Can you paint reproductions of lesser-known artworks?
Yes. Although we have experience with the most famous masters, we are happy to paint reproductions of any artwork for which the 70-year term has expired. Send us a good photo of the original and we will assess the job. Among other things, we have painted reproductions of local Danish landscape painters from the 1800s, forgotten symbolists and family portraits by aristocratic portraitists.
Which artists can you NOT paint reproductions of?
We follow Swiss and European copyright law, which protects artworks until 70 years after the artist's death. That means we currently do not paint reproductions of, among others, Pablo Picasso (died 1973), Salvador Dalí (died 1989), René Magritte (died 1967), Georgia O'Keeffe (died 1986) and other artists of the late 20th century. Write to us if you are unsure about a particular artist.
Can I change the size or the crop compared with the original?
Yes. We often adapt reproductions to the size and format that best suits the customer's wall. You can, for example, choose a square crop of a wide landscape painting, or scale the proportions up or down. We will advise you on what works best visually.
How much does a reproduction cost?
The price follows the same model as our other paintings: one fixed price per size - frame and shipping included. For example, a 70×50 cm reproduction costs 645 CHF. A floating frame is included in the price, and shipping throughout Switzerland is free. Larger works cost proportionally more. You can see all sizes and prices directly on the product page.
How long is the delivery time?
2-3 weeks from order confirmation to delivery. That includes the painting process (typically 7-10 days), drying, framing and shipping. Printed copies can be delivered faster, but hand-painted reproductions naturally take time.
Do I get my money back if I am not satisfied?
Yes. We offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee - that means you get your money back if you are not satisfied with your finished painting. The painting is returned at your own expense. It is a safeguard we offer because we understand that ordering a hand-painted work of art unseen can feel uncertain.
Can you make reproductions as gifts?
Absolutely. Reproductions of famous artworks are one of our most popular gift categories - particularly for milestone birthdays, weddings and anniversaries. Write to us if you have a deadline, and we will be happy to bring the order forward where possible.
